PREMISE
JUST DO IT
Qinmin Liu ︎ & Alex Nichol’s ︎ collaboration embody the Think Make Tank energy of ‘just do it.’ Experiencism.  Emphasis on Qinmin’s concept of the four A’s: anything, anywhere, anytime, anyone. And Alex’s: an idea must be experienced to become ones own. The project  launched into the San Francisco bay in 2016. The public was invited to join via kayaks.

The artist is always taking risks to challenge themselves. In Q & A, Alex and Qinmin were pulled out into the strong tides of the bay on rafts they built. The clear plexiglass boxes placed on these rafts unexpectedly caught wind like sails, and the kayaks steered by friends and volunteers, pulled against the forces of the bay. Alex and Qinmin were there to navigate identity. What it means to be American and female. What it means to be Chinese and female.

Using transparent boxes as a new context—to unpack the wrapper—the water a metaphor of how we move—with the idea that sometimes we choose to swim with a current that is foreign to us rather than to swim with the current we are born into.
